A Poem on Bunnies
I hate the word "bunny"
To describe an idea for fiction.
It's too cute, too Pooh-Bear and honey.
I want to cook it in my kitchen.

When its guts are runny,
I might stop this irate bitchin'.
(Yes, I know this isn't funny,
Too Glenn Close with her knife-finger twitchin'.)

But if you want to see me sunny,
And stop my spleen from itchin',
Head bank-ward, withdraw some money,
For a thesaurus to improve your diction.

Srsly? I love the term "plot bunny." It reminds me of the dust bunnies under the bed that are really hard to reach.

It's the cuteness of bunnies that annoys me, which of course is entirely a personal thing. Why is it presumptuous of us to say, "Yes, I had an idea for a story?" To me, it's one of the ways that fanfic writers undermine what we do, turn it into something silly and cuddly. I'm not saying that fanfic is rocket science or anything, only that it seems to me that there's no really good reason not to respect what we do, and ourselves for doing it.

I've had the weird experience lately of being offered "bunnies" by generous souls who apparently think that I'm creatively-bankrupt. It's bad enough hearing about other people's bunnies, but when they start pooping in my yard, it's time to pull out the shotgun. :)

In my on-line world, people take fan fic entirely too seriously. Like it's an important job or something. Consequently, I don't mind if they undermine it! But actually I never saw it that way because when people say "plot bunny" I'm visualizing a dust bunny, not a cute rabbit. I wonder where the phrase "plot bunny" even came from. Do you know?

I have no 'bunny.' Maybe I should do a research on the subject?

"Bunnies" are cute, fluffy things, aren't they? Isn't that what a bunny is, by definition? It's not just unformed and small (embryonic, inchoate, etc); it's cuddly and sweet. Those connotations seem to be pretty widespread in Western culture; one of the reasons the 'killer bunny' works in Monty Python is of course because it's oxymoron. But I don't think that people have the Python killer bunny in mind when they use the term; it's more about the cuddly-fluffy-pookiness of their itsy-bitsy ideas.

I just can't get into the fluffy fandom metaphors, like 'bunny' and 'listmommy' and other miscellaneous words ending with "y". Sometimes I see there's weird infantilizing edge to fandom, and that's what I'm reacting against.

(Heh. Any excuse to be bitchy.)

LOL It's a person who runs a list. Can you believe it?

This page of fanon terms was the source of immense help for me when I started in fandom.

Which also explains...

"Plotbunny: An idea for a fic. So called because they have a tendency to breed like rabbits and gnaw viciously at writers' legs. Wear padding and carry the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch when dealing with these little buggers. They're enough to explain why Anya has such bunnyfear.

I've had the weird experience lately of being offered "bunnies" by generous souls who apparently think that I'm creatively-bankrupt.

I imagine they've offered their fuzzy rodents to you because they've had ideas for stories that they'd like to see written, but think you could do a better job of it than they themselves, or simply because they like your style and want to see a Bryan Story about the topic or idea they have in mind. So, lawn defecation or no, it's meant in a complimentary way, I'm sure. :)

You're right, I know. I should probably be flattered. But they act like it's this great act of charity, like they're Mother Teresa and I'm some sad little leper who's ever so glad for the help. Um, yeah, thanks.

Mwahaha! Good one.

Where does 'plot bunny' even come from? Who ever thought it was a good idea? I don't get it at all. It's one of those fandom things that scare away new people, because que? It took me six months before I could even comment in Livejournalland, and another six before I could post, because of the impregnable discourse.

P.S. I enjoy your crankiness.

Hey, sweets. I really have no clue about the origin of "[plot] bunny" in its fannish incarnation, but I wouldn't be surprised if somehow the coinage was born out of a buried belief that our ideas should be relegated to a level of lesser importance or value simply due to their fannish nature.

Why denigrate your ideas? Aren't most ideas inchoate when they first pop into our heads? I know that mine are, but dammit, they're my ideas, so why not think of them as these incredible things? Do you see what I mean, how there's this tendency to conceive of our ideas as worthless, just bits o' fluff? Maybe it's a defense-mechanism: if we say our ideas are insignificant, then if no one likes them, we haven't risked anything.

Fanfic writers of the world, unite! We'll stand tall and proud, and call our ideas "ideas," and not be ashamed of thinking. ;)

P.S. If you agree to join me in the Great Bunny Kill of '07, there's some naked boys in it for you. Michael on his knees blowing Lincoln. Kellerman on his knees blowing Michael.

I kinda see them as this whole sharing ideas/information wants to be free kind of thing. After all, fanfiction is all about a certain idea being shared. Some television writer "births" the idea and we all grab them. They created them in a certain context but in a way they are free, we grab them, we put them in new situations, we make them do stuff. So in that way these ideas have a life of their own.

The same can go for our ideas.

I admit that it might be something more for non-writers like me. We two can have something in our mind. A picture of something. We might lack the proper tools to share it in story form. But sometimes ideas still want to be shared/should be shared. On a most basic level it is fun when you can find a mind mate who has similar ideas. Or if an idea/vision/mental picture gives you enjoyment or pleasure, isn't it more fun if it can be shared with others? Give them pleasure too?

Oh, I'm all for sharing the pleasure. We can have a mutual masturbation of ideas, a meta-orgy even--just, if you want my creative part to go hard and stiff and fulfill its part in bringing that pleasure to others, don't talk about cuddly little things like 'bunnies.' Be bold and talk dirty to me, say things like conceit, concept, notion, thought, caprice, fancy, fantasy, vagary, whim, brainstorm, inspiration.

'Cos if you choose to ignore all these pretty words and instead bring bunnies to the bed, don't blame me for the lack of orgasmic bliss at the end. ;)

There once was a jolly fat bunny,
Who doesn't find Bryan funny,
He runs from Bry's kitchen
Bry follows him bitchin'
Cos he's chocolate and already runny!
